While the title of our initial post may seem a tad dramatic, we’ve come to adopt a simple motto that we believe everyone could benefit from: Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst.
With that in mind, we take a peek at peak oil and see that oil supply has peaked, and the world is now headed down the slippery slope toward the point of no return.
What is peak oil? Put simply, peak oil refers to the logical theory that the earth has a fixed and limited supply of oil. Just as there are only so many diamonds in the world, there are only so many barrels-worth of oil. Peak oil says that once we’ve reached the peak supply, we will see our supplies dwindle over time.
In other words, we (the planet earth) have explored and found more than half of the available supply. This means that oil will become more and more expensive as demand exceeds supply. It’s a mathematical certainty which only the most blinded professionals have scoffed at. There is no limitless supply of oil. Every natural resource is finite. We can use it up.
The question then must be asked, “What are we to do as oil becomes more scarce and more expensive?” That is an excellent question! It is one of the primary motivations for the surge in eco-friendly technologies these past few years. Inventors and investors are racing to discover a suitable oil substitute. The majority of these professionals may be motivated by the desire to simply replace oil with another fossil fuel or process of energy conversion.
While we wish the scientists the very best (we enjoy our creature comforts too), we also prepare for the worst. The worst case scenario is an awesome and fearsome prospect, which will be discussed at great length in the coming months.
While we have inarguably squandered the lion’s share of a most precious natural resource in the span of a single century, we learn from our mistakes and make provisions for the future. Once oil and natural gas become scarce, how will we live? How will we eat? How will we travel? What will we eat? How will we live? These are basic, fundatmental questions we must ask ourselves as we prepare for the worst… as we preserve tomorrow.
